It is my pleasure to offer you vintage GOUDA VASE produced by Plateelfabriek Zuid Holland PZH in Gouda The Netherlands.

Plateelfabriek Zuid Holland in Gouda was by far the biggest pottery in Gouda and put the town on the ceramics map of the world. Its products still are very popular amongst collectors because of its colourful decorative collection in the early years of last century.
Its lifespan of 67 years started in 1898 by founding father Egbert Estié and they produced not only brilliant artistry but also thousands of mass produced articles. The first decade was characterized by influences (say copies or imitations) of Brantjes and Rozenburg: several of their best designers and painters were snatched away by PZH. But soon renowned designers like Chris Lanooy, Henri Breetvelt and Chris van der Hoef were involved and new production and glazing techniques were applied to make more beautiful but less expensive items.

Typical for the first years were the blue and grey high glazed series followed by art nouveau decorations on white clay and the dark glossy Gouda decors.
From 1910 the matte glazing was developed: Rhodian in first instance was a groupname of pottery on which a special way of matte glazing was applied.
It was Daniël Harkink who experimented with different kinds of clay, colour oxides and glazes. He found in 1908/09 the composition of this matte glazing and its application technique together with special paints that made it possible to combine the bright colour areas with a beautiful smooth glazing of constant quality. Together with the young Leen Muller het went to Paris to be inspired by the vaste collection of islamic pottery in Musée de Cluny.
Damascus and Rhodian were the direct result of this cooperation and it definately brought the separation between the profession of designer and painter.

This is such a collectable item: A nice matte glazed vasewith pattern SANA.
Fully marked on the bottom with the mould number (1203) pattern name, GOUDA, the factory logo of PZH (stylized the lazarus gate), the painters initials (H) and GOUDA HOLLAND.
