It is my pleasure to offer you this swirling handpainted Delft Jar produced by ZENITH Holland.

Zenith, owned by the Van der Want family, always has been a kind of eccentric member of the GOUDA factory community. Like many of them they had their roots in the earthenware pipe industry. From 1749 to 1984 seven generations of Van der Wants were committed to produce fine goods. They were averse to mass production but gave priority to artisticly justified products. That also is the reason that they never became as popular as the giant factories like Plazuid-PZH en Goedewaagen.

In 1915 the name Zenith was introduced to distinguish from other Van der Wants (Ivora and Regina). Soon its quality was respected and only the more sophisticated shops were contracted to resell the Zenith products. This gave them a name of exclusivity. Reknown artists like Jan van Schaick and Willem van Ham were employed and until 1923 a wide variety of high glazed products with art nouveau influenced patterns were developed. From that year more geometric and even abstract patterns were used and at the Paris Arts Decoratifs Exhibit in 1925 their award winning vases gave Zenith an international reputation.

From 1935 their handpainted Delft Blue production (based upon mediaeval models) gave new impulses to the factory and it became so popular that even the Porceleijne Fles from Delft sued Zenith over its use of the word "Delft"... Zenith won. But nevertheless, after a fire in 1980 Zenith had to close its doors in 1984.

But the Van der Want family started Zenith again to re-introduce the ceramic pipe. This factory was taken over by The Porceleyne Fles who is the legal owner of he name Zenith at the moment. Production is contracted now to Westraven, another Porceleyne Fles subsidiary.

This splendid fully handpainted jar is marked at the bottom with the crowned intertwined ZG, "Delfts Blue, Made in Holland, Handpainted" and the painters initial P.
