It is my pleasure to offer you this splendid vintage Delft Mariage Plate by Otto Eerelman produced by Petrus Regout Maastricht Holland.
Petrus Regout founded his glass and pottery factory in Maastricht in 1834 and became one of the most important Dutch table ware producers in the latter half of the 19th century until WWII. Since 1890 The text MADE IN HOLLAND was added to the factory logo and in 1899 the factory was renamed to Sphinx. In 1959 Sphinx/Regout merged with Société Ceramique de Maestricht. The factory stopped production of this type of pottery in 1969.
Regout produced a great number of wall plates that have been popular all over the times. Some of the pictures were after famous painters of the end of the 19th century. This is such an example after a painting of Otto Eerelman.
Note that these plates also have been produced by BOCH for Sphinx/Regout. That was in the seventies of last century. Connoisseurs prefer the much older Regout plates because of their quality and authenticity. This is such a real Regout.
Otto Eerelman (1839-1926) was born in Groningen and was a contemporary of the brothers Mesdag and of Jozef Israëls. He studied arts at the Minerva Academie and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp. After a short Paris period he settled in Groningen but in 1874 he moved to The Hague. There he made several paintings for the Royal Family and much of his work is part of the inventory of Palace het Loo, the latest residence of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard. Eerelman was famous for painting domestic animals and especially horses. In 1902 he returned to Groningen where he stayed during the rest of his life.
This plate is one of a series of 2. It depicts the summer horse-drawn shea wagon with a just married farmer couple after a medieval painting of O. Eerelman. It matches the winter horse drawn sleigh that is offered as a separate item. We have seen this pair go for over $600 in fine antique auctions.
In the middle of last century Sphinx contracted several of his models to the BOCH Pottery in La Louvière Belgium. So you may see these wallplates also made by Boch and marked with the BOCH logo that includes the text "Made for ROYAL SPHINX Holland" and a scripted text: DELFTS.
Marked at the bottom with the old Sphinx/Regout factory mark.
