It is my pleasure to offer you this porcelain Blue Onion Dinnerplate produced by Hutschenreuther Germany.
The origin of blue onion porcelain is closely connected with the early production of china in Europe. From 1720 the Manufactory of Meissen gradually succeeded in unraveling the the secrets of Chinese underglazed cobalt decorations. A type of china was developed that closely reflected the European feeling for style of that time. This Blue Onion was by far the most popular design.
However Onion is not exactly the right name because the onion is in no way part of the design. The fruit that adorns the rim is a pomegranate which only resembles the onion in the way it was painted.
The center of the design contains several stylized floral motives like peony and aster, the stems of which wind in flowing curves around a bamboo stalk.
The European tast has not changed very much since then, seen the many items with this motif that still were produced during the 20th century.
This plate is marked at the bottom with the Hutschenreuther factory mark.
