It is my pleasure to offer you this Maastricht Bridge on a Pelgrimage Art Plate produced by MOSA Maastricht.
Every seven years the Relics of St. Servatius and his successors are shown in a procession to the people of Maastricht, the city of pilgrimage for this Saint.
Servatius was bishop of Tongeren and later in his life he fled to Maastricht where he became the first bishop of this city. He introduced Christianity to the Netherlands when he built a church over the Roman temple of Fortuna and Jupiter, the Church of Our Dear Lady. This church, one of the oldest buildings in The Netherlands is still intact and a spiritual and religious site in Maastricht as it is the Motherchurch of Christianity in The Netherlands. Servatius died in Maastricht in 384. His remains rest in the Saint Servaas Basilicum, one of the most beautiful romanesque, medieval and baroque monuments in the Low Countries.
This plate commemorates this traditional catholic exhibition procession of 2004.
Mosa (the Latin name for the river Maas) was founded in 1883 by Louis Regout (1832-1905), one of the sons of Petrus Regout, who had several glass, ceramics and other factories in Maastricht. Mosa specialized in porcelain and tiles and was and still is the only Dutch factory that produced porcelain kitchen-ware industrially.
Mosa stopped production of art objects in the sixties of last century, but incidentally produces this kind of plates.
This plate was designed by Arjen van Prooijen, nowadays one of Maastricht's leading visual artists, who signed at the front. The back shows "HEILIGDOMSVAART 2004" and the logo's of the organising commitees.
This plate was produced together with another plate to commemorate the 60th aniverasy of the liberation of Maastricht.
