It is my pleasure to offer you this gorgious big GOUDA VASE produced by Plateelbakkerij Zuid Holland (PZH) in Gouda, The Netherlands.
The town of Gouda, Holland has been a commercial center since the Middle Ages. Most known to Americans for its cheeses since the 19th century, it was once known primarily for textiles. For hundreds of years, local clay was most often used for the long-stemmed pipes produced by master pipe-makers and favored by Dutch smokers. Born primarily from the French Art Nouveau, the Plateelfabriek Rozenburg factory opened in Den Haag (The Hague) in 1883. This factory's commerical success of handpainted artistic pottery stimulated competition from other Dutch factories including the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) factory in Gouda which opened in 1898.
Not only was PZH the first major ornamental pottery factory in Gouda, it went on to become the largest and most important. By the end of World War I, dozens of pipe, tile and other factories and workshops in Gouda and other surrounding towns, had added the PZH style of ornamental pottery to their product mix hoping to share in the success and wealth it enjoyed. But, and no matter where or what factory had actually produced it, the world called this matte-glazed, brightly colored, and profusely decorated style by one name only - Gouda Pottery. By the late 1930s, the style of production had changed mostly to high glaze forms of Art Pottery. By the mid-1950s, much of the success and lustre was gone - although a few styles and patterns from this period remain very collectible today. The closing of PZH in 1964 marked the end of the Gouda Pottery era. This vase is fully marked on the bottom with the mould number 3938, pattern name UNIQUE, the factory logo of PZH (stylized the lazarus gate), the yearmark, the painters initials and GOUDA HOLLAND.
