It is my pleasure to offer you this magnificent painting produced by The Royal Porceleyne Fles in Delft.

De Porceleyne Fles was founded in 1653 however it got famous when Joost Thooft took over this small factory at Delft in 1876. He produced traditional blue on white Delft ware and tile tableaus but with a new technique.

The painters of Royal Delft are trained in the factory starting off with simple designs in blue/white on the smaller pieces. A painter first has to learn how to paint the little flowers and leaves that so characteristically adorn Delftware vases and the borders of Delftware plates. The painters then gradually progress to larger pieces with more complicated designs. Only the master painters, who have trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague paint the elaborate landscape and Dutch masters pieces.

The great success caused that also paintings by worldfamous medieval masters were copied. This is such a highly professional painting after Frans Hals.

In the 17th century self-conscious rich citizens loved to have their own portraits. Who else could produce them better than Frans Hals, the Master Photographer of that era who painted their portraits, suggesting it was a vivid snapshot of their wealthy life. Not a static image but always a sign of life and movement in his paintings giving an lifelike impression of nobility and luxury.
Frans Hals probably was born in Antwerp in about 1580. He died in Haarlem in 1666. He mainly painted portraits and together with Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer he belongs to the Grandmasters of the 17th century Dutch Art of Painting.
His first wife, Annetje Harmensdochter, died already in 1615. In 1617 he married Lysbeth Reiniers. Both marriages gave him a great number of children.
His work contains about 200 portraits and 50 fantasy scenes. Most of his constituents had very important positions which indicate that Frans Hals was a respected man. But from several documents it becomes clear that he repeatedly had financial problems. As from 1662 - at his eighty years of age- he received an annual financial support from the Mayor of Haarlem.

Fully marked on the bottom with the yearmark CD (=1959), the Royal Delft Logo, The stylized JT of Joost Thooft and the master painters initials WtH (= Mr. W.M.G. ten Hacken who worked at De Porceleyne Fles from 1939-1984).
