It is my pleasure to offer you this huge FRUIT BOWL produced by HUBERT BEQUET in Belgium.
Hubert Bequet was born as a son of a coal miner in 1912. When he was 14, he left home to become a painter / decorator at the Faïencerie de Wasmuel. At the same time he started his 8 years study at the Arts and Metier School in Saint Ghislain. There he became possessed by the demon of creation, of modeling new shapes, vases, dishes and decorative objects. He rented an old garage, bought a small coal stove and started his own production in 1934. He married in the same year and soon Mrs Bequet bicycled all over the country with a full box of samples and the ceramics: decorated under glaze with country scenes, Victorian paintings and handpainted animals were well received.
This is a high quality handpainted fruit bowl of this well known factory. It attracts much attention because of the cobalt blue glossy pattern of a bird with a widely spread tail, surrounded by a flamboyant floral decoration. Many accents on the vase are in a rich gild paint which gives the bowl a special distinction. This "Blue Bird" decoration probably is the most appreciated pattern ever made by Bequet.
Marked at the bottom with the Bequet factory logo and the initials of the decorator.
